Data from Voyager 1 turned into music of outer space

In 1619 Johannes Kepler published a treatise “Harmonices Mundi”, in which he presented generalized data of his astronomical observations. And he described the concept of “music of spheres” – the harmonic structure of the universe. It was understood that such a perfect and orderly movement of cosmic bodies should create a melody. And in 2017, we finally heard it!

Specialists from NASA collected an array of data from Voyager 1 spacecraft from 1977 to the current time. This is information on the concentration of protons, alpha particles and other charged particles that met on its flight trajectory. The information was transformed into a melody – the data cluster for every 26 days became one note. So the real music of spheres was born.

Orchestration of the sounds of space is very difficult. The main melody, the “breathing” of hard radiation in the interstellar space, is played by violins that replace the piccolo flute at around 2012, when Voyager left the solar system. The piano reflected the influence on the particle flows of the gas giants of Jupiter and Saturn. And at the moment when Voyager heliopause passes, the whole tonality of the melody changes radically.

The entire melody, the 40-year-old Voyager flight, lasts about 3 minutes. The authors of this idea became doctors of sciences Domenik Vichinanza and Genevieve Williams. They hope to attract the attention of a large number of people to the exploration of space – no one pays attention to the dry columns of numbers and graphics, but everyone will hear the real music of the spheres!
